Softer than in the past
I have purchased in the past and loved the products. This time, the alloy seems a little "softer" than in the past. As a result, the material scrapes off in larger shreds, and can even stick to the scraper and go in strange directions. If it hits the tinder, the shred glows longer and is effective, but getting fewer but larger big sparks to hit the tinder is more challenging. I tested with a super scraper, palm scraper, carbide sharpener and knife spine; comparing my old Armageddon GobSpark to the new Armageddon Blank rod with a homemade handle. There is a difference, and I think I like the old alloy better. The new one also does not spark as frequently. This means I can scrape more material into the tinder before lighting, but it tends to use more material and I don't always get a spark when I want it. So this is still a good product, but I pay a premium compared to the 'cheap stuff' and expect perfection, and was a little disappointed, so only 4 stars.

First timer... no problem!
I’ve been bushcrafting for a little while now but I have never really thought to pick up a fire rod until now. I looked on Amazon for hours until one of my brothers swore by FireSteel.com. And let me tell you this tool Delivers As Promised! After a couple of fine shavings of wood, some larger twigs gathered, and some finally shredded birch bark, I was ready to give it a go... The same brother who suggested FireSteel.com looked at me and said, "You’re not going to get that started with this wind." But being as determined as I was, I wanted to try anyways. I pulled the striker on my multi tool out and stroke the rod two times towards my tinder and poof, FIRE!

Armageddon+Super Scraper is a winner!
Hello, I recently purchased an Armageddon firesteel (5" long) and after a quick test at home I used it over a long weekend up in the BWCAW. Even after scrapping the black coating off I was unable to get acceptable performance out of it. I scrapped so much that I rounded off one side of the spine of my inexpensive bushcraft knife (from a European origin) without being able to get enough spark to start a fire. This was a serious let down because my goal was to not use a lighter all weekend with my new wood burning cooking stove. I emailed firesteel.com promptly when I got home and asked them for a return of my firesteel, but after reading about my experience, Ron had a hunch the steel in my knife was not hard enough. He quickly and graciously sent me a Super Scraper for me to try. As soon as I got the Super Scraper I easily got sparks as advertised. The Armageddon with the Super Scraper is a winning combo. Thanks firesteel.com. Sincerely, Kyle S. Davies MPLS, MN

Same size rod as in the Gobspark.
This is the same size rod as the Gobspark, but without the handle. I didn't want a handle so I can stream line it on my ESEE 3 knife sheath in a ferro rod holder. I don't have experience with many other brands, but this gives nice blobs of sparks with my knife spine. Thumbs up!

Matching pair
Also bought the new Red Palm Scraper Kit with magnesium but passed on the "Toggle" because the 3.0 FireSteel seemed a natural companion to me. It's held together with bicycle inner tube band. Hint: don't burn the cord ends before you thread them.

A great purchase.
Being completely inexperienced with any sort of firesteel I decided to get mine from FireSteel.com based on the recommendation of Joe Robinet. After a quick modification to flatten out the spine of my folding buck knife because of it's rounded spine I was easily able to spark up a bundle of dry grass and also a small pile of wood shavings I had just carved off a log. Both methods worked great and seeing as I am completely inexperienced and did it with ease I was very impressed with the product. A great product from a very professional and friendly business, I highly recommend buying from FireSteel.com!

Highly recommended.
This is the second product I've purchased from Firesteel.com and I'm happy as ever with both the products and the surprisingly fast shipping. I would recommend Firesteel.com to any one, they obviously care about their customers. Al C
