magnesium tinder rod

Burning Magnesium

Using a knife or firesteel scraper, simply scrape the soft magnesium tinder rod to create a pile of magnesium shavings.

Spark your firesteel onto these shavings, which will catch on fire and burn very hot.

These soft magnesium rods can be used to help start a fire, especially if your wood is damp or wet.

Note: magnesium rods only => scraper and firesteel shown in the pictures are sold separately.

This Metal Burns!

Simply scrape off a small pile of magnesium shavings using your knife or FireSteel.com Super Scraper.

When you apply a flame or spark from from your favorite FireSteel.com FireSteel, the magnesium shavings will catch on fire and burn at more than 4000 degrees F (2200 degrees C).

This extremely high temperature makes magnesium an excellent tinder for helping you start fires, even with damp kindling.

Your soft magnesium rod is naturally waterproof - will stay dry even if dunked in water.

    Easy shavings

Posted by Sparks on Jan 15th 2012

My 'old' (non FireSteel.com) magnesium fire starter block material was too hard to realistically produce magnesium for use as fire starter. Ron has revolutionized/re-invented the use of magnesium rods, which are now useful additions to fire kits. I received a FireSteel.com 3/8-inch diameter rod in the mail yesterday. Using the palm scraper I watched in awe as the magnesium strings curled off the rod like wood from a block plane--almost. Generous amount of curly strips all the same. I will put my old (non FireSteel.com) magnesium blocks with the Christmas ornaments and hang them on the tree annually. They will provide more service there than they ever did for starting a fire.

    Magesium Tinder Rod

Posted by Michael on Sep 18th 2011

These magnesium rods are small and very light in the hand. It fits on my key chain with my firesteel. They sell at a great price, and the holes in the tinder rods makes it easy to put lanyard through them, but I use a key chain ring instead. I will be ordering more in the future at this price. This is a great product. Sincerely Michael

    Mg Tinder Rod Review

    Posted by Coyote1 on May 21st 2011

For the purpose that you would use this Mg Tinder Rod for, it's hard to beat. The magnesium rod is small enough to fit in a pant pocket without any troubles, and if you get the one with the lanyard hole drilled in it, then you can put it on one of those keychain rings you find in hardware stores and add it to your keychain or a lanyard with a Firesteel complete tool setup, or, just a Firesteel Rod with a lanyard hole in it too. At the low price these are being offered at, I am sure they will catch on real quick once folks start finding out how long they last and how small a space and weight they take up! :-) Certainly these magnesium tinder rods are inexpensive enough to buy a couple to try out and experiment with for yourself. As for me, I am ordering a dozen more of them along with and equal number of the new Super Strikers too! :-) Those work fantastic too. But, that is another story! :-D Hopes this helps my fellow outdoors Brother's and Sister's. Cordially, Coyote1

I bought a couple of them last week. They are very easy to scrape with the super scraper. The hole is fine for paracord.

    Fast and Easy

Posted by Joseph in Indiana on May 21st 2011

Firesteel.com's magnesium rods are soft and easy to use. You don't even need a knife to quickly get a good pile of the shavings--the super scraper works fine. I was frustrated with magnesium before because the other brands I was using are too hard to scrape and I feared for my knife edge. Thanks for a great product.

    Easy to use. no patience

Posted by Unknown on May 21st 2011

Well, unlike the other reviewer I believe you don't need patience. With my super scraper I get a decent amount of magnesium in 5-15 scrapes. And it isn't like that hard magnesium Cohlagans crap that's very very difficult to scrape off.
