Don't think you are prepared. Be prepared.

This product shipped the SAME DAY I ordered it! Nice. I also ordered a mag. block and a fatwood slab. After quite a bit of practicing and experimenting, I came up with my favorite way of using them. The scraper works very well on the fatwood, making something between dust and shavings that lights very well. I set the scraper horizontally, with the blade vertical and tilted just a little towards me, on the ground with the blade up against the pile of fatwood shavings. Holding the steel horizontally, with the end toward me pressed down on the blade and the rest over the pile, I pull it sharply toward me. This showers the sparks directly into the fatwood which almost always lights on the first stroke of the steel. It burns a surprisingly long time and would give you plenty of time to add more tinder. The magnesium works well too. Shaves well with the scraper and it burns more cleanly. I have to say that the fatwood slab combined with the steel and scraper is a great way to go. I have started over a dozen fires with the slab and there is probably enough left for 50 more.

Never will wear this firesteel out

Posted by Len on Feb 21st 2012

My FireSteel came and I tried it out tonight on a cotton ball soaked in PJ. ( I learned that from your video) Third strike the cotton ball lite right up. First two strikes I was getting my aim down I guess. Worked like it should. I have no doubt the ONLY reason I'll need more of these is for the rest of the families packs. I doubt I'll ever where this thing out. Great product.

The bunker size steel is great. It seems larger than the ones we at SpecOps got from you back when we were first deployed. I have been training intel officers after my 4 tours to Iraq and 3 to the Afghan Hills. I am using the fire steels in both the field ops and SERE parts of the intel training. I like the new scraper over the last large version. Those large blocks of magnesium were slowly whittled down over the years as were the old large fire sticks. We did have one pilot stand on a mountain scraping his fire steel as a signal. The PJs saw it 2 miles away. We even ignited time fuze with one to set off an IED.
