Description

The popular MagSlab FireStarter by FireSteel.com combines our special soft magnesium slab with built in FireSteel.com FireSteel, a genuine FireSteel.com Super Scraper, and two feet of 550 paracord (thousands of survival uses) as a lanyard.

Not only is the MagSlab FireStarter priced right, the added benefit of having a length of 550 paracord handy makes this a true value in any survival or outdoor kit.

To use the magnesium as tinder, simply scrape a small pile of shavings off the soft magnesium bar using the attached Super Scraper, gathering them into a small pile, about what would fit on a coin.  Flip the MagSlab over and use the same scraper/striker to scrape the 3/16th inch by 3 inch FireSteel rod along its length, aiming the sparks at your pile of magnesium shavings.  When a spark from the built-in FireSteel hits the shavings, the magnesium will easily catch on fire and burn at a temperature of more than 4000 degrees F (2200 °C). Make sure to have some additional natural tinder and kindling handy to add to your burning magnesium to build your fire.

A big advantage to carrying a piece of magnesium for tinder is that it will not become damp or wet.  It will burn even if you have totally immersed it in water.

Another great combination for starting fires under just about any conditions.

*Note: I recommend you also carry a larger FireSteel.  While the built-in FireSteel on the MagSlab FireStarter is excellent as a backup, the larger FireSteels are easier to use and give a correspondingly greater shower of sparks when scraped.

Specifications for this FireMaking Kit:

    A Must Have

There are a lot of magnesium products out there and at fair prices. But as far as dependable consistency these are superior in every way. They will perform as advertised

    Another terrific product by FireSteel.com

Excellent to use when dry tinder in scarce. If there's a remote possibility that you'll need to start a fire for warmth and survival THIS should be in your pack and/or in your car.

    Absolutely awesome!!

Posted by E.M. Delahoy on May 21st 2011

I received notice my MagSlab had been shipped on the 16th and was expecting it to arrive in 2-3 days. Imagine how pleased I was to see it in the mail the very next day. First stroke with the striker removed the enamel and the second produced a shower of white hot sparks as I have never seen before. To say I was pleased would be an understatement.

How could you not want this? Everything you need to make fire all in one small package. I bought 3 of these magnesium firestarters. It rains all the time where I live so the Magnesium is indispensable for starting fires.

Great for teaching groups how to use a Firesteel!

    Posted by Coyote1 on May 21st 2011

If like me, your teaching scouting groups in outdoor survival for their merit badge, CERT Teams, Law Enforcement/Fire S&R Teams, ect, using the Magnesium Bar lasts longer and will give you more shaving quicker that the FireSteel Magnesium Rods will. It also seems to be a bit easier or more comfortable to use for those with smaller hands such as children and some adults. Please understand that I am NOT knocking the rods at all, and in fact, it is the FireSteel Magnesium Rod that is lashed to ALL of my knife sheaths, especially the ones that I take hunting, camping, or that I use personally when I go out on a S&R/Search & Rescue call out in the middle of nowhere at 0-Dark-30 hours! Both are the best offered in terms of size, value, and purity of material. But when teaching I like to make sure I have enough shavings to make a nice large starting flame the first time when giving demonstrations. Then I let others practice with what I demonstrated with. When I get my new sheath system for my S&R knife then I will have room to go ahead and add the FireSteel Magnesium Bar! :-) If your putting together a small "Go Bag" of have a sheath that has a pouch on it, or if like me, you light a lot of fires throughout the year, then by all means get the BIG Bar. You will NOT regret it! :-) I hope this helps you fellow {guys and gals} outdoor types out there with your decisions. You just can't go wrong with any of the FireSteel Products! I've "played" with most of them and have yet to be disappointed. And the customer service is second to NONE! Safe & Fun Times Outdoors. Cordially, Coyote

    All in one

Posted by Nadia on May 21st 2011

I bought a couple of them last week (for me and a friend). The super scraper give huge sparks, even if the firesteel is quite small. With the big magnesium block, it will last a long time.

    the best without regular tinder

Posted by EDUARDO on May 21st 2011

I have another magnesium bar and I have started a fire without tinder (using the magnesium tinder instead) many times. Imagine this bar that is from FireSteel.com - I thinnk if the bar I am currently using is good, this magnesium bar is going to be better.
