 Product Description

The FireSteel Bunker Series by FireSteel.com are 1/2 of an inch thick.

This FireSteel is the 5-inch long Bunker 5.0 FireSteel by FireSteel.com combined with our special Super Scraper, lanyard, and a 3/8 x 3 inch rod made of soft magnesium.

To use the magnesium as tinder, simply scrape a small pile of shavings off the soft magnesium rod. When a spark from the FireSteel hits the magnesium, the magnesium will easily catch on fire and burn at a temperature of 4000 degrees F (2200 °C). This can then be used to ingnite your natural tinder

A big advantage to carrying a piece of magnesium for tinder is that it will not become damp or wet.

Another great combination for starting fires under just about any conditions.

  1. Firesteel.com is the best

Posted by NH on Apr 26th 2017

I own a lot of different ferro-rods and I still believe Firesteel.com products are the best. If I am heading into the woods for a day or a week, I have at least 1 Firesteel.com rod with me.
The 1/2" Bunker rods throw a nice big spark. I live in an area with birch bark and balsam fir sap all around, so I don't plan on needing the magnesium, but with it on there I know that even on a rainy day I will get a fire going.
I have some of Firesteel's smallest rods, many different medium sizes and these 1/2" rods. They all throw a great spark, but I do think that if the weight isn't a big issue, the bigger rods make a larger spark that can catch less fine tinder material better. Cotton balls are great for the small rods but with these I can get birch bark, and Old Man's Beard moss with balsam fir sap on it to catch easily. And brown cattail heads catch a spark even better than cotton but they burn FAST !
Firesteel.com is the best. They are in every pack I own and they go out in the woods with me every time !

  2. Nice product- I wished the FireSteel was straighter

Posted by Jay on Feb 27th 2017

I think this product will serve me for a long time. The FireSteel is pretty big...it just has a slight bent to it and I just wished it didn't. But the main thing is that it throws great sparks!!!

  3. Super Product

Posted by Alan M on Jun 30th 2016

I having used many firesteel products over the years. This is the best.

The design is super - great scraper, easy to hold with gloves, love the way the parts fit together, and with the lanyard, the parts are difficult to misplace.

Great addition to a survival kit.

    Highly recommended.

The shipping and service is excellent - Thanks again Ron

  4. Absolutely the best!

If you can't start your fire with this setup, you must be trying to start it underwater!

  5. Absolute best !

Can't go wrong with this one. I Definitely recommend it.

  8. Great product and customer service

Posted by Ron C. on Dec 20th 2014

No way will I wear out my FireSteel Bunker 5.0 from overuse. My son and grandsons will enjoy its use long after I'm gone.

When I first tested my new steel, it both sparked and lit my Vaseline-permeated cotton ball immediately.

  9. The Bunker is amazing!

Posted by john on Oct 17th 2014

The bunker is huge and will last a life time, Because of its size it will work well with gloves on if its cold out side, versus a small rod, I have a lot of fire starting devices and this is my favorite now!

  10. Rookie starts fire

Posted by Bill on Jun 2nd 2014

Used as directed. A little Magnesium wood scrapings and big sparks from the Fire steel rod. It took me 5 minutes to get wood scrapings going from there in was all campfire.

  11. Great Product!

Posted by Eric on Feb 5th 2014

I'm looking forward to using my firesteal every chance I get! I recommend getting the scrapper with it so as not to dull a knife with constant use.

  12. First time user with "flint & steel" method

Posted by Norman F. on Jan 13th 2014

After I opened it, I tried the GobSpark a few times with the black layer coating still on it and the oil coating, too. It made a few sparks. After a few strokes, I got through the black layer and then I wiped the oil coating off of the striker. Then **Poof**. A shower of sparks and the tinder went up on the first stroke. I had never made a fire using a "flint & steel" method before. This GobSpark and a few instructions from FireSteel.com on how to use it makes it really easy.

  13. Talk about sparks!!

Posted by John on Nov 5th 2013

Works darn Great! The scraper is a must have so you don't dull your knife. Awesome

  14. The right stuff in the right sized package

Posted by Malvin P Bellanger SR on Nov 4th 2013

I purchased this kit after seeing many reviews on YouTube. I have had it with me almost every waking hour since I received it. It was used to start brush piles, construction trash pile and three fire pit fires shared with my granddaughters. The oldest even showed us how she would use it as a signaling device by sparking it skyward. Very effective by the way. My children like this kit. It will be Christmas gifts for their overnight packs. All in all a very good quality product that does what is advertised and can also be adapted for other uses.

  15. A very addictive, very useful, very handy product

Posted by Malvin P Bellanger SR on Nov 4th 2013

I saw your products reviews. This combination of emergency fire making tools is very handy. I have already used it in a number of everyday tasks you find around a farm. Brush piles, construction trash piles and evening fire pit burns with the granddaughters have all been no muss on fuss. I have shown the set to my sons and daughter. Christmas gifts for their overnight packs.
The price is right, the combination of products is right and just as important the size is right (I have big hands).
When I find a product marketed as "emergency, survival" that I can conveniently use for everyday tasks I consider it a win win.
Last night I was showing my granddaughters how to use the magnesium bar and Firesteel. One of them remarked that the sparks were very bright. She conducted a test to see if her thoughts were correct. She said, "see if you can find me". She took the set out onto the field sparked it. There was no problem seeing where she was. She said, "I though that it could be used as a flare if I was lost".
I like it, my children like it, my granddaughters like it. Grand slam with my family.

  16. Excellent and easy to use

Posted by Tayvl on Oct 17th 2013

After reading the directions ("Press down hard...simultaneously very quickly scraping...quick fluid motion...takes a little practice and experimentation...") I was ready to spend a while figuring out how to make a proper spark. I cleaned off the protective coating of the rod, struck it fairly gingerly with a short stroke, and a shower of large bright sparks shot off the rod. So much for the steep learning curve... :>) Now to test the magnesium... (outdoors)

  17. Great spark

Posted by Unknown on Sep 12th 2013

    Premium product . I'm impressed.

  18. Will save my life one day

Posted by B Dollar on Mar 13th 2013

What else to say but this will save my life one cold wet day

  19. Works perfectly!

Posted by L. Lockwood on Dec 30th 2012

Worked the very first time, no learning curve, little effort, exactly as it should be.

  20. Exactly what I wanted

Posted by Jacob Anderson on Dec 18th 2012

It was surprisingly hard to find a quality fire starter like this, but I finally found one here, so easy to get your fire started, and it will definately last! Thanks firesteel.com
