For well over a thousand years before the advent of matches, firesteels like the FireSteel.com Mountain Man FireSteel were used to start fires.

Each Mountain Man high carbon firesteel comes with a flint striker that is composed of a beautiful piece of Jasper that I prospect in the mountains of the Great North woods. This same jasper was used by Palo-Indians to fashion spear points and arrowheads some 10,000 years ago.
Jasper is a very hard rock that breaks into sharp edges that are perfect for making sparks when struck by a Mountain Man firesteel.
