I got the Firesteel bunker over 4 years ago along with a couple of magnesium slabs, a magnesium rod, a couple of scrapers and two chunks of fatwood. I went nuts with this thing, making dozens of small fires and generally scraping the daylights out of it. After that I calmed down a bit and now only use it when lighting fires camping or hunting for just for a bonfire. I even light my charcoal grill with it. Even after years of use, I would say it still has 80% of it's material remaining. It's a little oval, but still thick and sparks like new. The scraper is a super valuable tool to have with this, it works fantastic for scraping a piece of fatwood into shavings for tinder, it shaves their magnesium blocks and rods very well and really makes a shower of sparks with the bunker. Their magnesium is REAL magnesium. It is soft, shaves very easily and burns better than even the genuine Doans GI issue mag fire starters. Don't even get me started on the crap the chinese sell as magnesium, you can't shave that stuff or light it with anything less than a blowtorch. What I do with the bunker to light a fire is make several bundles of twigs starting out with the very fine twigs at the tips of dead limbs (the size of match sticks) and work up bundle by bundle from there. I take a piece of bark, use the scraper to scrape a small pile of fatwood shavings (I'm still on the original piece by using this method) onto the bark, stand the bunker vertically with the end at the edge of the shavings, and stroke the scraper down the length of the rod in a smooth motion. You don't need to dig into the metal like the idiots on survival shows do, just scrape firmly down the length and it will shower sparks into your fatwood, which almost always lights on the first scrape. Then I hold the bundle of fine twigs over the burning fatwood until it ignites, lay it down on the bark and start adding larger and larger bundles as the last one gets going. Work every time for me. I grew up with kitchen matches in a Marbles match safe, but kitchen matches are such low quality now that you need something that is more reliable. If you have a firesteel bunker, a scraper and a piece of fatwood and/or magnesium, you never have to worry.

I have been a customer of firesteel.com since 2015 and have bought the 1/2" by 5" Bunker & the 3/8" by 6" Armageddon. the Gobspark Ranger w/striker which I also bought the magnesium rod that I placed on my neck knife. And 2 Gobspark Armageddon w/striker handle that I gave as gifts. Which are all awesome....I do not buy firesteels from anywhere else. These firesteels are all top notch. I am a customer for life and I tell all my friends to buy all their Firesreels here. Strike any of these firesteels and enjoy the fire works of sparks.

This steel is not small nor is it light. How ever this big hos is the boss. They baby throws out sparks like a firework. This baby will last over and over again. The larger / thinker size makes it so easy to handle summer / winter. Firesteel.com has the best products I have tested and seen. I have been a customer since 2013 and never looked another way. I would also recommend getting a scraper from here. These steel are the best product you can ever use.
This steel is by far my favorite and I highly recommend one for every bag / bugout kit you have.
Thank you Ron for a superior product and the best service on the internet.

I've had experience with numerous ferro rods from numerous manufacturers. I can without a doubt say that my five inch bunker outperforms any that I currently own. Some ferro rods require tremendous amounts of pressure, even from a hard 90 degree edge. My bunker gives me a bright shower of hot hot hot metal. The thing is money, firesteels.com was awesome as well.

I had one that I used all the time, and ordered 2 more so I can have these in different packs and camping set-up's,for day hikes and long treks. They are the real deal and then some. the bigger the rod, the bigger the shavings, the faster you get a bigger spark/fire. It's a no brainer - there is no way you can be disappointed in this rod. If you are, then you don't know how to use it properly.

It is safe to say that this firesteel is huge by comparison to most on the market. However, I was specifically looking for a firesteel of this length so that I can cord wrap it and still have a usable span of firesteel.

The fun way to make fire by friction.
Works like a charm.

I wanted to get myself one, all round, firesteel to carry with me while hunting, camping and backpacking. This one is the perfect size and will last me for a very long, long time.

WOW! What else can I say? This thing is a beast. I don't know if I will ever be able to use this one up. With a proper striker this thing throws a shower of sparks the likes of which I have never seen. The hole is perfectly drilled, and fits standard 550 cord perfectly. With the speed of the shipping and the quality of this product, I will become a repeat customer!

This thing is huge! It's make me feel secure if the power ever go out for a long term. I like the fact that there is already a hole for the lanyard so I don't have to do anything to it, or wasted the part that I have to make the handle to it, in this way I can use the whole thing. I would get a few more just in case. Highly recommended.

At first I had my doubts. It seems that the first few strikes may not work so well maybe because of the coating it initially comes with or maybe it took me a couple learning tries. However, now that I have been using it more, it is throws lots of spark and works very very well. I got the .5" by 5" so I hope to be using this for an extremely long time too. I am very satisfied with my purchase
Note from FireSteel.com - our firesteels come with a thin protective coating. Typically it takes a couple of scrapes to remove this coating, after which the sparks will fly!

lots of hot sparks, off the back of my fixed blade knife. It's big, should last a life time.

I bought this with an extra super scraper. This gear is honestly the best I have ever found. Nice camo paracord lanyard, and I am massively happy with this purchase.

If a baseball ball and a flamethrower had a baby, then this is what it would look like. wow. I'm not sure how anybody could ever wear this thing out. i love it!

The Bunker is large enough not to require a handle to be comfortably used, and will last an indeterminable amount of time.
It's peace of mind having fire in all conditions made even more peaceful by knowing it won't wear out in your lifetime unless you are Rooster Cogburn.
These Firesteels are the best offered anywhere.

If its serious long term lifetime fire capability your interested in, you cant go wrong with the Firesteel Bunker.

Whenever I'm out in the woods during the winter I always have 2 things with me. This firesteel with a striker around my neck. And my Scandinavian forest axe. This firesteel has never let me down when starting a fire. Even with heavy use for the last 8 months it barely shows any wear. This is a great firesteel and well worth the few extra dollars to add the lanyard hole.
